Is That…A Piece of My Toe?!

I played soccer for nine years. I got blisters, dislodged toenails, broken toes, but it wasn’t until I lived in a dorm that I got athlete’s foot. It is one of the most irritating afflictions on the planet. You don’t really notice at first, but you start getting this itch between your toes and it won’t go away. So you wriggle your toes and try scratching with your fingers but it just doesn’t work. Then you stick a pencil or something in between your toes and OH MY GOD IT’S THE CURE!! I swear, scratching that itch is almost as good as sex.

Okay, that is an extreme exaggeration….but still….it feels so much better.

Anyway, I’ve been warring with it ever since. I get it, I put on cream or spray and it goes away. Then eventually it creeps back. Well it’s gotten to the point where my right big toenail looks like it should just be excised (and sprinkled with Holy Water and possibly shot with a silver bullet) and I’d pretty much given up on ever having a presentable right foot again (oddly enough through the years only my right big toe and pinky toe have ever been effected).
When I was visiting CB in Gent he gave me a tube of Daktarin (what I’m pretty sure is basically the Dutch version of Lamisil) and read me the directions (they were in Dutch). I’m supposed to put it on twice a day for 6 weeks.
I’m on week 3. And I think my toe is getting worse. Now lately the skin is getting dry and hard and peeling off and the edges of the nail look like they are actually sinking into my skin.
I know…ew, ew, EW!!! No one wants to hear about my foot fungus, but it’s actually starting to worry me a little. This is like, predatory streptococcal athlete’s foot I have here.

The upshot is I’ll be insured as of November 1st, so I plan on employing the services of a podiatrist, post haste. Hopefully I can obtain a permanent cure for my leper-toe.

(This was originally going to be about how I was showering [sorry for that mental image] this evening and how I dropped my razor on my good foot [the left one], taking a big old piece out of my toenail. The grossness factor of the evil toe ended up being much more interesting than the lack of drama when I realized there was no blood coming from the good toe.)
