From the city of three rivers to the city of three towers, and everywhere in between…

Today is the day! Did you go out sometime in the past two weeks and do something to improve your environment? Do you have any tips for making our world a cleaner, greener, healthier place for people or wildlife or foliage?

Western Europe is very conscious of the environment and CB was already doing things to preserve nature before I came to live with him. He uses energy saving light bulbs in every socket, the refrigerator beeps if the door is open for over a minute, we bike or take the bus to our destinations (I still walk a lot of the time, but I’ve been riding the bike a lot more so now my butt doesn’t even hurt the next time I sit on the seat), we recycle pretty much anything the city of Gent is willing to pick up and there’s a composter in the garden where most of the food matter goes after meals. We also started getting a weekly supply of locally grown organic vegetables that CB splits with one of his colleagues. Every Tuesday he brings home an array of fresh organic veggies grown here in Flanders. Not only does it support local farmers, it also forces us to eat a lot of vegetables (that aren’t sprayed with pesticides or other questionable toxins).

But specifically for Project Support Beauty in Nature I goaded Cabana Boy to come along with me for a garbage collection walk through the park…

gross waffle

Ooh, yum, someone decided to leave a half-eaten waffle on our window sill! Good thing we had the garbage bag.

A reminder of who we’re doing this for (no those aren’t mine, but you get the general idea)

Now it’s your turn! Hop on over to Sarcastic Mom and check out the bloggers that decided to make a difference, and while your at it, pick up a trash bag and take a walk around your local park, recycle that plastic bottle when it’s empty, ride a bike one day a week (or walk or take the bus) instead of getting into your car and whatever you do, don’t be overwhelmed to the point where you become indifferent. When people stop believing that they, as individuals, can make a difference, that is when the battle is lost.

Don’t be afraid to make a difference.

My project was a neighborhood walk and clean up as well. Am I the only one who didn’t take pictures? lol

I also have a link back to an earlier post with loads of information on how to make your house more green very easily.

My project was to switch over to green cleansers. I WISH I could bike places. I live just over a mile from the center of my little town, but there are no bike paths or sidewalks, and the road into town has a 50 mile per hour speed limit (roughly 80km), so I can hardly walk down that road pushing a stroller with kids! It drives me crazy how American cities are not planned with walking or biking paths. I so admire those of you who can and DO take advantage of that. Good for you.

Well, it’s been too darn cold here to get my students out to do their share, but, at home I’m making a concerted effort to turn off lights and not waste food. I am jealous that you actually have flowers growing already…grrrrrrr..it’ll be May before I see that in my garden! Got to keep this effort going and maybe we will make a difference!

Rock on! You’re doing a lot of good. I like that fridge beeping thing - where did you guys get that?

Thank you so much for supporting the project. I think this helps the earth and at the same time, it’s a great anti-depressant, isn’t it? Doing good feels good. :-)

Look at how adorable you are with your hat and garbage bag!

Like I said on Cablegirl’s blog this morning, I think I’ll take a garbage walk in my neighbourhood when all the snow is gone (we have about 5 feet)

    good job :)

but you shouldn’t throw the waffle in the blue bag you are holding, right. That is for cans and plastic bottles, but I’m sure you know that by now :p

Well, see … cleaning up mess that isn’t yours is illegal in Belgium, we even have to pay for that, since every little 30 liter garbage bag costs 1.5 euro.

But … cleaning other people’s mess up is one thing, paying for it is another. So we took a cheap blue bag (only for plastic, metal and drink cartons) and sneakily put it next to a public garbage can (hoping we wouldn’t be caught and severely fined for our illegal altruism).
