Valentines Day

February 14th, 2008 Lilacspecs 5 comments

So, everyone is blogging about Valentines Day or their hatred of Valentines Day or bringing attention to the fact that they are NOT blogging about Valentines Day.

Well I did celebrate it and I have no qualms about that.

I spent 4 years being single and despising February 14th because it makes single people feel crappy. And I admit that. This holiday is totally about men buying women expensive stuff to prove their love. But we also know that Hallmark did that and that anyone is free to celebbrate the day however they so desire. Every year I was single I got drunk on cheap wine and watched the Vagina Monologues, be it with single friends or by myself and I found that to be a soothing balm to the ache of being alone. The last Valentines Day I spent with a boyfriend before this one…well, I’ll just save that one for tomorrow’s Flashback Friday.

So if you think Valentines Day is complete rubbish and don’t want to read about how we spent it feel free to go read some of my other posts instead. In fact, if you delve back into last year, there are a bunch of broken links from when I migrated to my own hosted blog this month. Find them for me and let me know about them and make yourself useful (kidding, kidding…but if you do find some, please let me know and I’ll fix it pronto).

CB and I play an MMORPG online and last year for Valentines Day we weren’t really a “couple” persay. However, in the game CB bought me a bouquet of gold roses on Valentines Day. This year we said we weren’t going to get anything for Valentines (both knowing we’d each probably do something). This evening we’ll be going out for dinner at Foley’s and then to see Hooverphonic in concert so really there was no need to do anything extra, but that’s just not how we roll.

I decided on the way home from class that I would buy some flowers for the house. I personally could care less about flowers but I know CB likes having fresh ones in the house (this is a Belgian thing… they really like lots of plants in and out of the house) so I opted for tulips since they are blooming right now. I took a new route home and unintentionally passed the bloemenmarkt (flower market) and lo, there were two or three little stalls set up with tons of multicolored flowers for sale. I looked around and saw gold roses in one of the crates. Immediately I went and bought 20, bought a blank card and headed for home. When I got there, much to my dismay, CB’s bike was still in the hall. Crap! He decided to work at home today. I hustled into the kitchen and started to write my message on the card, but I had wanted to write it in Dutch and had composed a whole message in my head on the way home. Problem is, I can’t read/write on moving vehicles because it makes me nauseous so I couldn’t check my grammar before I wrote the message. CB came downstairs and I made him wait outside the kitchen until I was done writing. He started heating chocolate that was over the burner (he’d had me light the burner but I really hadn’t looked at what was over it due to my rush) and I gave hime the card and the roses. The he took the pot of chocolate and we went upstairs.

He had little tea lights under a mini oven rack, basically creating a little makeshift fondue pot and then from the bedroom he brought out a plate of fruit and some toothpicks. So for lunch we had chocolate dipped fruit. He even used light cream and 72% cacao dark chocolate to make it as healthy as possible while still being a sweet and romantic little lunch for the two of us.

After that I went and studied my lesson from today (heaven help me, level 2 is going to be hard) while he went back to work on the computer. I should be showering and making myself presentable for going out tonight so that’s what I’m going to go do. Have a great evening gentle readers, be you with or without a partner, eat some chocolate, have some wine and relax this evening. Friday is just around the bend.
