Music Monday – The Beauty of Grey

One of the new purchases I made while in Pittsburgh was an iPod Nano (yes I finally gave in to the power of the iPod). It’s shiny and sleek and skinny and the sound is sublime and I just couldn’t take it anymore, so I ponied up the cash and bought one. While we were at my parent’s house CB hopped on my old computer and put most of my music on the iPod so that I could listen to it on the plane (which I didn’t do because I was too busy watching the in flight movie, dodging the spit from the toddler sitting in front of me and obsessing over the welfare of Rex, who I could occasionally feel against my feet when he turned in hs carrier). This past week was actually the first time I used my Nano, to listen to music on the way to class on the bus in the morning. With the rediscovery of music that I haven’t listenend to in years; some I’d forgotten I even had, my passion for Live was rekindled. I’ve been a huge fan of Live since I first heard “Lightening Crashes” from their second album Throwing Copper. The song I’m featuring for this Music Monday, “The Beauty of Grey”, is from their first album Mental Jewelry and until last week I had never heard it. As soon as I did though, I knew the rest of you should too. And while I love Live, the visceral instrumental stylings and the raw vocals by Ed Kowalczyk, it’s their lyrics that truly move me and keep me coming back for more of their music. These lyrics in particular struck me as a message that needs to be heard, understood and initiated by all of us. Enjoy.

Live – “The Beauty Of Gray”

If I told you he was your brother
We could reminisce
Then you would go about your day
If I said you ought to give him some of your water
You’d shake your canteen and walk away

The perception that divides you from him
Is a lie
For some reason you never asked why
This is not a black and white world
You can’t afford to believe in your side

This is not a black and white world
To be alive
I say that the colours must swirl
And I believe
That maybe today
We will all get to appreciate

The Beauty of Grey

If I told you she was your mother
We could analyze the situation and be gone
If I said you ought to give her
Some of your water
Your eyes would light up like the dawn
The perception that divides you from her
Is a lie
For some reason we never asked why
This is not a black and white world
You can’t afford to believe in your side

This is not a black and white world
To be alive
I say the colors must swirl
And I believe
That maybe today
We will all get to appreciate

The beauty of gray

Look into your eyes
No daylight
New day now
