I love having a bakery just across the street, and the multicultural vibe from living in Brussels. Oh, and the waffles :)

Hey I didn't see that post before! Here's a question for you: What is your favorite Dutch word and why?...My first one was "Nachtwinkel" which used to crack me up for some reason.

One more question; What's your favorite topping on frietjes?...Mine used to be "Samurai" (before I went vegan).

OK one more: The three kiss thing when greeting people: Do you love it or find it invasive and tedious? (Personally I found it charming until I had to kiss everyone like a million times at my wedding).

Somehow, this seems like it might have been a good post for you in terms of timing. I, too, so miss the fabulous transportation that is available in so many other countries.

snooty? what a cute word :p!

that's a wonderful list though! It kinda matches with my list of things I really missed when living in Canada! Food was on the first spot (before my family...well because of knowing that I went home after 12 months). But historic buildings were definately also one. Somehow I missed "roots" in the contemporary towns in north america.
The kerstmarkt is one that amazes me. you come from the country with christmas stores all year round?

When you asked for questions I wondered also what you truly dislike about Belgium, but somehow I'm not sure if I want to know or read that....I wonder if it would make me feel defensive or not.

I also love all the things you listed. I've found that compared to England the public transport system is amazing (admittedly, in England I lived in a village with about one bus per hour and here I live five minutes from a metro station). I got a train out of Brussels for the first time and it was so quick and simple. I've also started walking a lot which is new!

I think these are wonderful lessons and I'm still really jealous that you get to be an ex-patriate. It's been a dream of mine for years.

P.S. - I'd love to friend you on Facebook. E-mail me your ID, or you can find me under my username (same as my blog).
