Portrait of The Author as a Young(ish) Woman

“For today’s prompt, write a self-portrait poem.”

Still as stone, masking
The inner cranking.
With somber brown windows
That occasionally crinkle
In unguarded joy.

Untamed curls and hidden dimples
That contrast with the scars
And Sharpie-stained fingertips
But synch rather well
With the random acts of kindness.

Calloused perserverence and
Heightened compassion
Clamor deep down within.
Nearly twenty nine years spent
Inside this person that is me.
